Reskilling begins with the ability to imagine a next role.
Context
When an occupation changes or disappears, a person does not lose only a set of tasks. They may lose status, community, confidence and a future they believed to be predictable. If this loss is treated merely as a skills deficit, many people will be left outside the transition.
Position
We understand potential not as a hidden test score, but as the possibility of connecting experience, values, curiosity and new tools into a meaningful direction.
What systems must provide
Time for orientation; safety to express uncertainty; access to real experiments rather than courses alone; feedback from people and institutions; and a path from an idea to social or economic reality.
Role of AI
AI can widen access to knowledge, support prototyping and offer different perspectives. It must not present inference as truth about a person, score human worth or direct people toward consequential choices without transparent human oversight.
Research questions
Which conditions help a person move from loss toward a new direction? How can agency be understood without turning it into a score? How can organisations recognise potential that is not visible in a job description?
